The difference between apparel OEM and ODM (2020/09/23)

Apparel OEM

You often hear about OEM and ODM in the apparel industry. They are very similar, but the mechanism is a little different. Both types of production are carried out, but they can be differentiated by who does the planning.

What is OEM?

OEM stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturing" and is the production and manufacturing under the direction of the manufacturer.

We ask for them when we do not have the production background or when our own factory is overstretched.

Planning is done by the manufacturer, who is given fabric instructions and patterns for production.

The OEM company manages the schedule, but each time a sample is received, it is checked by the manufacturer, and if there is even a slight difference from what the manufacturer wants, it is corrected or sewing instructions are given to produce a product that satisfies the manufacturer.

What is ODM?

ODM stands for "Original Design Manufacturing," and it is a form of planning, patterning, and production in which the manufacturer purchases the product.

With an outside company planning and producing the product, there is no need for a designer and no need for a production background.

All you need to do is to choose a good design, attach a brand name to it, and sell it.

In fact, if there is a request from a manufacturer, we sometimes produce products in accordance with the manufacturer's request so that they are no different from OEM products.

When both are incorporated well, the missing pieces can be filled in and production can be achieved.
